Bend sofa by B&B Italia

Patricia Urquiola's has designed a surprising series of seats that transforms the tradition concept of the sofa. She has entitled the product Bend upholstery sofa due to its curvaceous albeit monolithic form. It gives the appearance of being manually moulded from a supple material as if by a sculptor.
In practice, it issues from a study of 3-D models and digital research. Bend upholstery sofa effectively conveys the idea of motion by alternating full and empty spaces. Contrasting seams add to the intrinsic design on the surface.
The backrest is irregularly shaped, but without compromising comfort. Curved modules - assembled starting with the seats, ottoman and corner elements - form a sofa that breaks out of the usual visual schemes and differentiates from other contemporary pieces on account of its calculated eccentricity. Bend upholstery sofa offers flexible composition solutions, including small linear versions, corner solutions or a spectacular (non necessarily domestic) version that can fill a space with double-sided seating arrangements, becoming the absolute centre of attention with its iconic presence.

Chicago sofa by Lammhults

Some people find this chair sensual. Probably because of those undulating curves. But when you sink into it you don’t notice much of them. Instead you’re struck by what a pleasantly cool easy chair it is, with the recesses functioning as air ducts. My main aim was to experiment with the expression of backrest and seat. I did as I usually do, drew a sketch first and trotted off to the upholstery workshop. “Is it even remotely possible to make this?“ Because everything depends on the curves being distinct, if they were to flop then it would all look terrible. And in the workshop they came with their usual confident response: “We’ll give it a try.“ A friend of mine calls Chicago the “cigarette case“.

Cinema sofa by Lammhults

Three years. That’s how long it took to develop Cinema. And yet it looks so simple. Why is this? It’s all in the details. I tested innumerable different stitchings, developed a technique to have the leather fit snugly round the armrests, struggled to make the fastening in the backrest invisible. Over the years this way of working has become typical for me, always slimming back, reducing without compromising the character of the piece. For Lammhults, where they’d earlier mostly worked with pretty robust proportions, Cinema signalled a first step towards a neater collection. And a broad international breakthrough. Where the inspiration came from? From my old sports car. I was fascinated by how comfortable it was despite the cramped dimensions.

Binta armchair by Moroso

"Binta was inspired by Africa. Its sculptural shape evokes African wood carvings, but its polyurethane rubber forms are softer. Like a baobab tree, Binta anchors itself firmly to the ground with thick, trunk-like feet whose elegant forms bring to mind the weighty baobab. Its upholstery is a patchwork of Wax fabrics, the traditional textiles worn by African women. Contrasting patterns and colours emphasise the armchair's shape, enveloping and moulding its silhouette. The brash, bright colour contrasts are in the tradition of African textiles and colour schemes; they conjure up the elegant tailoring of women's clothes as if Binda were a Senegalese lady about to wear and enhance the hot colours of Africa".

Volant sofa by Moroso

In designing the Volant collection, Patricia Urquiola furthered her research into the "skin of objects". Its upholstery is in fact Volant's defining element. "It has something of a Balenciaga gown or a Shogun's robe. Using the body as a basis for transformation. Hiding the legs. Lined for greater comfort, greater beauty. An elegant evening dress". The seat may also be "dressed" in a simpler and less formal short outfit which allows glimpses of the legs and hints at the body's shape while maintaining its own identity. The third "dress" is close-fitting. It is simply the seat's casing, which reveals the frame and highlights its shape. The composition is simple and self-sufficient. The base frame seems orthogonal but it is really a trapezium so as to follow the lines of the backrest and seat. This leads to a sharp contrast of regular and irregular shapes even in the perception of the seat elements which may seem flat but in actual fact have curved sections for optimum comfort.
